mija mgmt is a music management company based out of LA. Founded by Doris Muñoz back in February of 2017, the relatively young company has made a splash in the entertainment industry for all the right reasons.

Minority representation in the music industry is near to nonexistent, and Muñoz has made it her calling to not only represent these up-and-coming artists of color, but also to uplift the large communities surrounding them. The 24-year-old has felt the cruel hand of ICE and has personal experience with the struggles that many immigrants face today. Back in 2015, Muñoz’s brother was deported during a routine appointment at the immigration office after his DACA status had been revoked. On top of that, her parents are currently at risk of being deported if they do not raise enough funds to pay for the associated legal fees that come along with American citizenship. Despite all the heartbreak and tragedy, Muñoz has succeeded in creating a company that simultaneously brings representation to minorities and gives back to underprivileged communities. Since the company’s conception, Muñoz has been hosting a series of benefit concerts titled “Solidarity for Sanctuary” in order to raise funds for various causes that support people of color. These services include scholarships, suicide prevention organizations, and paying for immigration related legal fees.

In the past year, the management company has taken six artists under its wing, representing August Eve, Cuco, Welfair, Hunnah, Inner Wave, and Jasper Bones. The young artists are slowly building names for themselves.

Recently, I was lucky enough to attend Cuco’s performance at Noise Pop 2018. Cuco, Jasper Bones, and August Eve were in the midst of their Together Tour, and had put on a great show at the Mission’s Gray Area Theater. Despite the awesome performances backed by stunning visuals, personally, the most memorable aspect of the night was the audience. I had never been to a show before where everyone was so supportive and comfortable with each other. By walking into the venue, I joined a community that would yell along to the Spanish love ballads, cheer anytime Cuco picked up his mariachi trumpet, and dance along to the cumbia music between sets. It was nice to see such a wholesome crowd cheer on their favorite artists of color, and it was a real reality check to how important representation in the music industry is.

If you’re in the LA area this Saturday, be sure to check out this month’s “Solidarity for Sanctuary” event with Jarina De Marco, Amindi K. Fro$t, Hunnah, and Empress Of.
