100 Gecs and Machine Girl together in concert is a match made in heaven. Their April 5 show at Oakland’s Fox Theater was no exception. For anyone looking for high-energy music and dancing, it was a must-see show.

The show was packed. Fans of the duo, Dylan Brady and Laura Les, were wearing their I <3 gecs shirts and clawing towards the front to throw their stuffed animals at Les. “Gec, gec, gec!” echoed through the audience.

And Machine Girl never disappoints in their energy, ability to rile the crowd, and their creativity with jumps, props, and outfits. The drumming of Sean Kelly makes it impossible not to jump frantically to his fanatic metal beats. Frontman Matt Stephenson makes you move in sync with his spontaneous screams that feel perfectly timed. Together the duo brings such talent and vivacity while never stopping to surprise themselves or the audience.

100 gecs running out to their new hit “Dumbest Girl Alive” caused uproars and dancing all around. One of my favorite songs was “Doritos & Fritos.” Seeing it live allowed the absurd and chaotic beats and lyrics to feel so fun and danceable.

However, moshing was so severe and dangerous that the security guards at the Fox Theater were grabbing fans from the crowd and kicking them out. Brady and Les were in the middle of “I Got My Tooth Removed” when they had to stop the song multiple times to ensure that the security people weren’t mistreating fans.  One security guard was so aggressive that he put a fan in a headlock and threw him from the crowd causing him to hit his head on the stage. Seeing this, Les immediately stopped the song and literally said to the guards, “You can’t be throwing fans on stage.” They apologized to their fans and their stagehands informed security to get a hold of themselves. Audience and security took the note and the concert continued on a better note.

Overall 100 gecs gave a performance full of energy eccentricity and creativity while showing their care for their fans’ wellbeing.
