LA-based and singer-songwriter Sasami Ashworth is a rising musical force. In addition to being the former synth player for indie rock group Cherry Glazerr, she’s also contributed her multi-instrumentalist talents to recordings by indie artists such as Avi Buffalo, Hand Habits, and Wild Nothing. After graduating the Eastman School of Music in 2012, writing and orchestrating film scores in addition to her studio contributions, and touring with the likes of Snail Mail, Soccer Mommy, and Mitski, SASAMI in finally releasing her debut eponymous album through Domino Records on Friday March 8. In anticipation, she’s released four singles and three music videos in the past year, the most recent being “Free,” which features Devendra Banhart. Both the song and video exhibit a refreshingly minimalistic delivery, allowing comfortable space for emotional subtleties to shine. Half-whispered refrains from Banhart and Ashworth float perfectly over gentle images of a still home and quiet disaster. Her other videos for “Jealousy” (which she directed) and “Not the Time” match the more playful tone of their respective songs, complementing the unpretentious fun that colors her image. If you’re already listening repeatedly to her four released songs and are craving more SASAMI, you can stay updated and admire her buoyant personality through her instagram. Or even just check out her merch, which offers a metal straw that’s reusable and eco-friendly— I mean, that’s pretty cool. Be sure to listen to her debut, SASAMI (2019) next Friday March 8, and catch SASAMI on tour at the intimate Rickshaw Stop in San Francisco Tuesday April 9.
