Attention all angsty people: this piece is for you. There has been a drought of truly invigorating angry music in the 21st century — or at least it seems this way because none of it surfaces beyond the underground scene. But fear not because the legendary grunge band, The Smashing Pumpkins, has recently announced a reunion tour, “Shiny and Oh So Bright!”  They will be touring all over the country, including a stop at the Oracle Arena in Oakland on August 27.

Although The Smashing Pumpkins have been consistently recording studio albums since their inception in 1991, this will be their first tour with the original drummer, Jimmy Chamberlin, and the original rhythm/lead guitarist, James Iha, since the recording of their critically acclaimed two-disc album, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (1995). This reunion is only missing one original member: bassist, D’arcy Wretzky. Even though her presence (and awesome backup vocals) will be missed, the prospect of a tour with ¾ of the band that inspired a whole generation is still extremely exciting.

The proposed songs that may feature in their setlist have already been announced, and since it is promised to be a large stage production, singer/guitarist, Billy Corgan, has confirmed that, once decided, the setlist will remain the same for every show. This list of proposed songs includes hits from the band’s first five albums: “Cherub Rock” and “Today” from Siamese Dreams (1993), “Bullet With Butterfly Wings” and “Muzzle” from Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, “Siva” from Gish (1991), and the list goes on.  A decade’s worth of grunge hits, combined with the anticipation of great production, should be enough to compel any rock fan to see them on this tour. Due to the Smashing Pumpkins’ reputation, it’s sure to be one of the most memorable concerts of 2018. Be sure to grab a ticket to release some of that angst!
