Now that you’re finally into the groove of the new semester, midterms are here and ready to slam you. Somehow the sky seems to know this, and has been sending plenty of rain our way. Here are a few songs to help get you through any gloom the rain and school might be causing you. This playlist ranges from old sounds to new, touching on a few classics while highlighting some trendy new bands. We start in the ‘60s with Etta James’ “All I Could Do Was Cry” because I think we can all agree her voice is amazing, and a break up obviously associates with a rainy day. Followed is Otis Redding’s classic, “Sittin on the Dock of the Bay,” a song that seems to genuinely comfort the soul. Next, the Stones and The Velvet Underground appear with some slower songs, “You Got the Silver” and “Pale Blue Eyes.” Of course we find The Beatles in the soothing chirps of “Blackbird” and the longings of “Yesterday,” both Paul songs on acoustic guitar. The list continues with the relationship theme into the ‘70s with Fleetwood Mac’s hit “Landslide,” a song that begs you to sing along. We then jump to the 2000s, with a wide variety in sounds just in this era alone. If you’re looking for a light, beautiful voice, Sufjan Steven’s “Mystery of Love” from the recent movie Call Me by Your Name will be just right. Wilco’s “If I Ever Was a Child” highlights the band’s expert ability to balance the instrumental with Jeff Tweedy’s voice. When you’ve finally accepted that the rain might never end and that you should take it in stride, listen to “Hold On” by Alabama Shakes for a little uplifting boost. Or if you’re really getting into it, bumpin’ to Car Seat Headrest might just be your move. The playlist highlights new bands like Crumb who only have released two EPs so far. When searching for the return of the Otis Redding’s soul, listen to Teyana Taylor and you’ll immediately be wishing you could’ve been born with her voice. Oh well. Listening to her is another good option.
