Crowd energized by Sun Club’s enthusiasm at GAMH

Bandmates Shane McCord, Devin McCord, Mikey Powers, Adam Shane, and Kory Johnson certainly succeeded in sharing a surplus of enthusiasm upon arrival at the Great American Music Hall last Wednesday.

Opening for The Districts, Sun Club brought the small crowd to their feet with a set comprised only of upbeat songs during which the band members never tired. Dancing on stage throughout, it was definitely apparent that they were having a great time. While the majority of the crowd appeared to have initially bought their tickets to see The Districts, it was obvious that there were many new converts after Sun Club’s set.

Sun Club’s energy carried through from beginning to end. The indie rock band infused into every song sporadic lyrical arrangements and backed them with lively instrumentals. Their vocals ranged from catchy choruses to spontaneous shouting, effectively introducing an air of excitement around each song. The set list for the night included a few songs from the upcoming album The Dongo Durango as well as songs from their previous EP, Dad Claps at the Mom Prom. The song “Tropicoller Lease” was a big hit among the audience.

Although the band sounded considerably less cohesive live in comparison with their studio recordings, the trade-off between a cleaner sound and a high-energy performance was ultimately worth it in terms of exciting the crowd. At the very least, the members were invested in performing and the excitement did not end after the last song. The band stuck around listening to The Districts and one member even attempted a rather unsuccessful stage dive.

Overall, Sun Club did an excellent job in rallying the crowd and getting people moving to the beat of their happy-go-lucky performance. They are certainly a band to keep an eye out for, especially with the release of The Dongo Durango in just two short weeks.
