It’s that time of the year again. July 1-2, Oakland’s Mosswood Park will be the site of the 8th annual Burger Records’ Burger Boogaloo. Dreamlanders’ cult cinematographer John Waters returns to host the event featuring heavyweight headliners Iggy Pop, Buzzcocks, and X. Hosted by a label that prides itself on being “a rock n roll philanthropic quasi-religious borderline-cultish propaganda spreading group of suburban perma-teen mutants,” the beloved punk exhibition retains its DIY spirit as it attracts its biggest acts to date. Other significant players include Guitar Wolf, Shannon and the Clams, NRBQ, Personal & The Pizzas, Quintron & Ms. Pussycat, La Luz, Nobunny, and Jacuzzi Boys. The festival survives without the assistance of corporate sponsors. In years past, returners Nobunny incinerated an American flag on 4th of July weekend and garage-rock four piece The Mummies played their punk-soaked set wrapped in toilet paper on top of a 1966 Pontiac Bonneville. We can only hope that the same screwy standard of irreverent kitsch will return this weekend.
