Within five minutes of stepping into the venue I was complimented on my outfit, a group of friends offered a shot, and had four new Instagram followers. The non-stop kindness and friendly attitudes persisted throughout the night, which I attribute to Lizzo’s messages on love — for others and yourself. There’s not many artists these days that act like a life coach, but Lizzo is able to this feat through hip-hop beats and pop elements. Lizzo has been making waves in music for many years, but recently she has caught the attention of music fans and celebrities for her feel good music. She’s like this generation’s Missy Elliott — in fact, the two teamed up for the single “Tempo” off of Lizzo’s debut album. Lizzo’s stop in San Francisco was happily welcomed by locals, selling out in under 40 minutes on presale. The second night of her sold out residency at The Warfield proved she is one of the most prolific performers in pop today. Lizzo delivered a nonstop set of pure fun. Even her slower pieces were delivered with fire and exuberant amounts of sass. Before breaking into her song, “Jerome,” she told the audience, “This song is about a scrub… Who don’t deserve this ass.” The crowd roared back in agreement and lit up the theater with cell phone flashlights that swayed to the rhythm. Lizzo and her dancers dawned pink outfits and were highlighted by pink lights the entire night. I couldn’t help but smile and think “Fuck yeah, 2019 is the year of the woman.” She reminded us that we are all beautiful and we should remind ourselves of that every day. I surveyed the theater and sensed that each person in the audience truly felt that they were special and seen. I started the night by dancing alongside a mother and her 12 year old daughter and a group of close friends who travelled from SoCal just for the concert, and I ended the night dancing with drag queens. The beauty of these interactions are not lost on me, I am in awe of the sheer human connection and happiness that radiated through the crowd. I obviously don’t know Lizzo personally, but I’m so proud of her. She constantly challenges the idea of what beauty can be, she’s worked for years, and she’s finally getting the attention she deserves. After Wednesday, I’ve felt a new sense of power within myself and I absolutely attribute this to her show. If you’re in need of a pep talk, a break from your day-to-day, or just a good time, Lizzo will provide and heal.
