To add more cultural diversity to the B-Side playlists, here’s an introduction to the Latin music world. With the scene poppin’ as always in the US, it’s easy to forget about the international scene. However, Spanish-speaking countries are rich in musical history, and have birthed many influential artists. This playlist combines modern Latin trap with classics from the 20th century. Highlighted on the playlist is “Chan Chan.” From the documentary Buena Vista Social Club, the song is one of many from different presented groups in Cuba’s pre-revolutionary cultural tunes. Selena’s “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom” highlights the Texan-Mexican icon’s talent, and urges you to end gun violence, as she is a victim of gun violence. Then we also have new artists like Rosalía, who are using traditional flamenco rhythm as a base to spin into a pop song. Some of the Latin pop stars make it to top the Billboard charts and gain recognition in the U.S., like Enrique Iglesias and Shakira. While all the world seems to know “Waka Waka,” fewer people know Shakira’s older hits, like “Ciega, Sordomura” that actually got her to the charts. Latin trap is another category of music that is up-and-coming in American recognition, with artists like Puerto Rico’s Bad Bunny, who got his first listens off of Soundcloud, collaborating with Drake in “MIA.” If, however, you’re looking for that indie rock girl band, Hinds is there for you. Although singing in English, while listening to the Madrid garage band, you can hear their raw energy and are immediately compelled to jam with them.
