Twenty One Pilots gave an outstanding performance at the Fox Oakland Theater Saturday, on the first night of two. The tag team duo, Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun, played not only to a packed audience, but also to a crowd at home as the entire show was televised. The stop in Oakland was part of their album tour, Blurryface. The best part of the show was arguably the interaction between the bandmates and the crowd. Twenty One Pilots were transformed from two members to hundreds as the fans became the choir for many of the songs in their set. Tyler announced to the crowd that “we need you to be there for us and step up for us when we fall,” and the audience did not disappoint. There was a strong sense of camaraderie felt between the fans and the performers. At one point, members of the audience even climbed onto one another’s shoulders per Tyler’s request. The performance was very well-executed as it ranged from Tyler and Josh (and the drum set) joining the packed crowd to a subdued and mellow acoustic rendition of Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love.” The majority of the songs were from the new album, but the fans were always excited to sing along to some of their favorite classics, specifically “Car Radio.” Tyler announced that his goal for the night was to make sure that “night number two comes nowhere close to night number one.” We have no doubt that night number two was another great one, but it definitely had a lot to live up to after this first energetic performance.
