Move aside, “Monster Mash.” This week, MGMT dropped their first single since their self-titled album release back in 2013. Titled “Little Dark Age,” it’s a groovy techno-pop track with twisted undertones. Eerie and upbeat, the song sounds like it belongs in a thriller movie montage. Just in time for Halloween, “Little Dark Age” feels a bit like its own Frankenstein –  combining futuristic sounds with a gothic feel. Their catchiest release since Oracular Spectacular (2007), “Little Dark Age” combines old tricks with a new treat, indicating a promising return from Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser’s band.

Since their last appearance four years ago, MGMT has appeared to tweak and master the eccentricity of their previous album in a way more accessible to listeners. “Little Dark Age” still feels edgy like MGMT (2013), but has you wanting to press “repeat” over and over again like their earlier work. Combined with a new music video featuring spooky mansions, creepy makeup, and a little dark magic, the video is just frightening enough to leave spine-chilling imagery in your head. “Little Dark Age” feels weird like “I Love You Too, Death,” but is approachable enough to play on the aux cord like “Electric Feel.” A solid single like “Little Dark Age” will give rise to high expectations for MGMT’s album release early in 2018, but if the band from Connecticut can debut with a freshman album like Oracular Spectacular and follow with incredible discography, there’s little doubt they will disappoint.
