LIZ resurrects "Y2K" sounds in Just Like You

LA princess LIZ repackages familar sounds from decades past in bright pink candy wrap on her debut EP, Just Like You. The seven-track album loosens hip-hop and pop chains from the new millennium, giving the passé-but-not-yet-retro styles soul and body, aesthetics reminiscent of R&B jams by Mariah Carey and Ariana Grande.

Lead single “Y2K” reveals the theme of the EP through an unpredictable mix of popular styles, orchestrated by producer Lido. From scratch, artist and producer deliver a refreshing spin on R&B, reconstructing the old crackling rhythm and laid-back pop hook, signatures from the early 2000s, while bubble-gum and feel-good vibes creep onto the record in plain, conspicuous sight.

The second track to be released, “Say U Would” showcases Liz’s vocals against a Baltimore club-inspired backdrop. While it’s catchy in the veins of Gwen Stefani, it lacks the distinctly spark of “Y2K.” Mad Decent has been building up to the release today premiering the album track by track over the course of last week. Hip-hop fans should keep an eye out for “Don’t Say,” featuring Tyga, one of two final tracks to be released. As for now, stay “Hush” with LIZ’s debut music video.
