Noise Pop 2014

Going on 22 years strong, Noise Pop will again unpack its annual festival around San Francisco this week, and everyone from hometown indie hero Mark Kozelek to Michigan up-and-comers Lord Huron will be plugging in to play its many stages.

Other notable acts on the bill include Throwing Muses, Com Truise, Majical Cloudz, Ladytron (DJ set), and local (and national) favorites Trails and Ways, Mikal Cronin, and Terry Malts.

The festival will run a full six days, Feb. 25 to March 2 this year (and a pre-party Feb. 24), with gallery headquarters The NWBLK (The New Black) designated as a mingling center and host to the festival bookend ceremonies, the kick off and closing.

Noise Pop has been rounding up the best of new and classic music acts since 1993, when founder Kevin Arnold was offered a single night for his own gig by management at venue The Kennel, now known to show-goers as The Independent. A UC Berkeley alum, Arnold studied architecture before deciding he wanted to stick with hanging out at and working with the SF music scene.

The first Noise Pop lineup consisted of The Overwhelming Colorfast, The Meices, Corduroy, Carlos!, and Bitchcraft.

Like Arnold’s venture in into promoting, the evolution of Noise Pop from its one night stand to a mult-day span at many different venues was spontaneous.

“It was never intended to be what it is today,” Arnold told The Examiner in a 2011 interview.

Arnold continues:

It was really one show. It was called Noise Pop festival and I made a poster for it, and that was really to give it a special event mystique. The next year, a bunch of bands asked; “Hey, can you do it again?” The second year I moved to the Bottom of the Hill…. We did three nights that year. The next year it grew to five shows, at a couple of different venues. Back then we only did one show per night. It was just me doing it myself.

Arnold soon met his creative partner Jordan Kurland, and together they worked to elevate the festival to a multiple shows per night event. And the rest, as we stand now, is history.

“We’ve been the size we are now for about the last five or ten years,” said Arnold.

Noise Pop also set up camp in Chicago for two consecutive years starting in 2000, picking post-punk icons Television to front the Windy City’s 2001 bill.

Though they’ve since kept the festival a Bay Area event, the festival crew are still into trying new ventures, like the aforementioned headquarters. The headquarters this year, a new staple to the fest, will also host its own events every night of the week, including a Q & A, happy hours, a brunch, films, and its own live shows. The full headquarters schedule can be found here.

“We’ve been really happy with the general size and intimacy and scope of the festival,” Arnold said in 2011. “We just keep on looking to surprise people every year, and, like I said, keep ourselves interested.”

We at The B-Side are still interested in 2014, and excited about the festivities this week. Along with the wide variety of bands to choose to see, there’s also a scatter of venues to see them at, from The Fillmore, to Slim’s, to The Roxie Theater, The Regency Ballroom, and others.

To participate, you can purchase a General Badge for $150, a Superfan Badge for $350, or individual tickets for select shows on the Noise Pop website. Some of the shows only require an RSVP, and some have already sold out.

You can keep track of the fest with their Noise Pop 2014 app. And stay tuned for our ongoing coverage of this week’s shows.
